A Guide to Spring Cleaning Your Wood Burning Stove

With winter well behind us and summer on the way, there is no better time than now to give your wood burning stove a much-needed spring clean. Your stove has likely been working hard during the colder months to keep you and your family warm, and now it’s time to give it some TLC to ensure it continues to run efficiently all year round. Follow our top tips below for spring cleaning your wood burning stove!

Clean your firebox

It’s important to remove excess ash whenever it builds up. Whenever you use your wood burning stove for long periods, it’s always a good idea to remove excess ash using a dustpan and brush, followed by a vacuum. Following this, use a soft brush to clean the firebricks and remove any build up of soot. Removing soot will leave your bricks looking much brighter. This is also the perfect opportunity to inspect your stove for cracks or signs of damage.

Clean the glass

To ensure your wood burning stove is sparkling, the glass will need a good clean. Using scrunched-up newspaper is a good way to remove soot and dirt off the surface of the glass. Once you’ve cleaned the glass using newspaper, use a soft cloth coupled with a wood burning stove glass cleaner to make it sparkle. We recommend investing in a professional wood burning stove glass cleaner; all-purpose cleaners are not the same.

Check the seal

Finally, check the door of your stove for any signs of damage or wear and tear. If you notice any signs of damage or the seal is coming loose, it will likely need replacing. A good way to check your door rope seal is to take a piece of paper and shut it in the stove door. The seal between the door and the body of your stove should be tight enough so that the paper does not move when pulled and the door is closed.
